Recipe Keywordsbread cheap easy fried snack

Description

This was one of the first recipes concocted when our people were first introduced to government commodities. It is easy, cheap and delicious, and makes a great "filler" for meals that might be on the lean side (i.e. unexpected company). It is basically a more substantial version of fried dough.

Ingredients

  • 2 c flour
  • 3 t baking powder
  • 1 t Salt
  • 1 c milk

Instructions

Heat an inch or so of oil in a frying pan.

While it is heating, whisk dry ingredients together in a bowl, then stir in milk.

Turn onto a floured surface and kneed lightly - just until it is no linger sticky. Pull off pieces and flatten into 6 inch disks.

Fry one at a time, flipping once, until golden brown.

My favorite way to eat them is to slather them with butter while they are still hot, and then soak up the butter with sugar. If you love sweet stuff like me, you can then top them with maple syrup and whipped cream and eat them like pancakes.
You can also use them instead of taco shells to make "Indian Tacos".

Enjoy!

Notes

There are many, many recipes for frybread, and I have tried a great deal of them and found this one to be the best. It is a tradition in our house, and many of my guests ask me to make it when they visit.

I'd love to know what you think of it:
